It will be another shot in the arm for the world’s largest social network, who are rapidly expanding in the mobile sphere. They recently purchased Snaptu, a mobile application developer based in Israel, for a reported $60-$70 million.

This recent purchase has shown Facebook’s desire to increase their market share even further, in the hopes of moving beyond the 1 billion subscriber mark. Snaptu works to develop software for ‘feature phones’ – not quite a smart phone, but one which can run Java or other simple language apps.

Rumours surfaced in previous months of Facebook’s plan to release their own branded mobile phone, however those stories proved to be mere speculation. HTC has, however, recently released a number of handsets with direct integration with the social network.
