Have a look below at the brief Motorola Droid 2 review and let us know what you think.

Should You Buy? Motorola Droid 2 Review

As many people might know, the Motorola Droid 2 is the successor to the original Motorola Droid that was released almost a year ago upon massive promotion by Google, Motorola, and Verizon. At the time, the goal was to provide a solid iPhone competitior/alternative and the Droid did just that, filling some gaps with things the iPhone couldn’t do, and backed by the slogan “Droid Does”, it was a huge success.

The Motorola Droid 2 has much more competition in today’s smartphone market, but the problems associated with the new iPhone 4 certainly gives it a potential to steal away some market share from the Apple crowd who might be open to an alternative.

To start off, the Motorola Droid 2 price is adequate – shipping at 199$ (with a 2 year activation on voice plan with data pack 29.99$ required.).

When looking at the full Verizon Motorola Droid 2 specs, there is not a real revolution in terms of changes from Motorola Droid and some things have been left out which are included in the Motorola Droid X phone – but there are still improvements here and there.

The phone is powered by a much improved 6085 Coprocessor OMAP 3600 series (1Ghz) chip and comes with 8gb of flash memory and 512MB of ram (twice that of the Motorola Droid 1). Android fans will be happy to know that the Motorola Droid 2 comes with Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) which is the latest version of the ever growing Google powered operating system.

The camera does not see a major overhaul as some would have hoped, with 5MP deemed sufficient by the Droid 2 designers. All sorts of audio (MP3, EVRC, AMR, MIDI, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, QCELP, EVRC, EVRC-B, AMR-NB) and video (H263, H264 MPEG4, WMV) formats will be supported. Adobe Flash 10.1 has been added in order to enjoy the latest internet content.

The lack of 720p recording might be a deal breaker to some and certainly won’t impress Droid 1 users who have the same 720×480 30FPS recording lens.

The 3.7inch screen remains in tact as well as the pull out keyboard. However, there has been significant change in the keyboard and navigational pad. The enter, space, shift keys have been made larger and the D-Pad in the original Droid was replaced with arrow keys which allows for better navigation. Overall the buttons have been made more accessible and responsive and has somewhat answered some of the complaints of the original Motorola Droid.

One of the Motorola Droid 2 features that’s being advertised is the Droid 2 moblie hotspot ability that lets you provide 3G connectivity for up to 5 other Wi-FI enabled devices in its vicinity. These devices could be anything from PSP/DS gaming devices, to laptops, to tablet devices such as the iPad, to portable cameras.

Faster processor, better ram, improved navigation and button design, updated Android all point to a better phone for interested parties. A lack of improvements in other areas prevent this from being a ‘must-buy’ phone, especially to previous Motorola Droid buyers. However if you’re sick of the Apple iPhones and want to try your hand at phone with a keyboard – the Motorola Droid 2 is the way to go. You can buy Motorola Droid 2 or buy Motorola Droid 2 R2D2 version on August 12th onwards if you truly believe “Droid Does”.

Let us know your thoughts on the Verizon Motorola Droid 2. Review of the phone was conducted in preliminary stages of trial and we will be sure to update it as more observations are made.

Id love to hear from a user how well the “wifi hotspot” function works>I heard it is pretty useless on the Droid x.

  2. Got it, Not impressed says:

I got the Droid 2 about 2 days ago and I’m less than impressed. I changed from a BB 8330, so I was looking forward to a better 3G experience. In a word, 3G hotspot doesn’t work. I can connect devices to the hotspot, but they have no data connection to the internet. VZW tech support basically told me too bad, take it back. I use the mobile broadband for my job, so it’s a must-have.

basically junk. switched from a bb curve and was so excited. after spending countless hours trying to get it to accept my email settings (both personal and enterprise) including more than 2 hours in the Verizon store with most of the staff trying to figure out the problem, trying other droids, etc made the decision to switch to the Samsung Fascinate. Took less than 10 minutes to set up ALL of my emails and they worked flawlessly. Additionally power useage seems about 25% better doing the same level of activity. Avoid the droid 2 if you need it to do anything but look fairly cool.

I have had the Droid 2 for about 45 days now and I loved it…until 2 days ago. It freezes up. Won’t turn off. The screen is blank. Took it to Verizon store and they cleaned everything off of it. Got to my car and it was locking up again. Removing the battery doesn’t always work either. Verizon is sending me a replacement but this is insane. There were 4 other Droid owners at the same store with similiar problems. One guy was ordering his 2nd replacement. STAY AWAY FROM THE DROIDS…

droid 2 3g hotspoot works great but after getting the 3g hot spot, using the phones 3g by itself it tells me no connection avable. about 1/2 the time the phone shows i have 3g and it wont work. i have had the phone for 4 months i never had it not work in this area

  6. DAVID Dunn says:

Droid 2 has several very big problems. For those the use this for business as well as personal there is no spell check function in email or texting. Major Problem! If you use Microsoft Enterprise to connect to your corporate email you can not search the emails that are on your driod. So if you have 20 emails from the same person over 21 days and you need to find a note or name in one of them, you have to go back to each one.

Also bad or non exsistant cut and paste in email. Even if you at docs to go or one of the other word processors there is no spell check.

  7. Mary Jane says:

Well despite the negative reviews, I love my droid 2. It is everything I expect in a phone. Nice smooth interface though not as polished as htc sense. Fast internet with countless number of apps to download :)

  8. Richard says:

” It freezes up. Won’t turn off. The screen is blank…”

This is exactly what my droid 2 has been doing.

I could not even make outgoing calls when I wanted to much less receive incoming calls. The Internet slowed down to unusable to a black screen.

I went to verizon for help, waited 1/2 hour and the same problems remained after they worked on it. I took it home and to Canada anyway.

Finally, back in the USA after missing two important business calls and not being able to use the telephone feature at all to make an appointment for my car maintenance, I went as a fast emergency measure and reactivated my three year old phone and now I have a telephone again.

I loved the features on the Droid 2…when they were working…the GPS, voice command, etc. However, I bought a telephone to have a telephone.

Half the time, it seems I don’t have either.

I am trying to decide what to do after this.
